Several Car Bombs Target Shiite Pilgrims in Iraq
TEHRAN (FNA)- At least 18 people were killed and 83 others were wounded in several car bomb blasts in Iraq's Western province of Karbala today, local police officials announced on Saturday.
Speaking to FNA in the holy city of Karbala, General Othman al-Ghanimi, the official in charge of security in the region, said, "Thus far, a number of 18 people have been killed and 83 others have been wounded in the terrorist attacks in the province."
He added that the first attack took place against Shiite pilgrims in the Northern parts of the province, killing 8 people and injuring 33 others.
Also FNA dispatches reported that three other car bombs went off simultaneously in the town of Hindiya this morning and killed 10 people and wounded 50 other people.
On Friday, two car bombs were blown off in the town of Toiridge, 25km East of the holy city of Karbala killing 5 persons, and wounding 23 others.
The Shiite holly city of Karbala is witnessing nowadays visits by thousands of Shiites to commemorate the anniversary of Imam Al-Mahdi, the 12th leading Imam of Shiite Muslims, born on 15th of Shaaban month of the Islamic Hijri calendar year 255 in the city of Samarra.
