KADIN HOPES POLICE ASSURES CONTINUATION OF FORESTRY INDUSTRY

Jakarta, Sept 14 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) hopes the national police chief assures the continuation of the forestry product industry that has been facing raw materials supply problems as the result of differences between the police and the forestry ministry regarding the interpretation of authority over illegal logging.

"The business community is hoping that the fight against illegal logging and mining will not sacrifice legitimate industries," chairman of Kadin's Fiscal and Monetary Standing Committee, Bambang Soesatyo, said here on Sunday.

He said that in the past year forestry industry businessmen felt they had fallen victim of the differences because the legal industries had also faced raw materials supply problems.
"Kadin hopes the new national police chief will protect industries that are obviously legal, follow the regulations and contribute to the state's foreign exchange revenuee," he said adding he fully supported the new national police chief, who was only candidate chosen by resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
He said several new investments in the forestry sector had been delayed because of a stop in wood raw material supply. "The forestry product industries hope the new national police chief would secure business certainty," he said.
Besides that he also hopes the new national police chief will continue the fight against gambling, smuggling and crime. "We also support the fight against illegal logging and mining," he said.
Based on data from the industry ministry the growth of wood and forestry product industries continued to decline since 2007 and the drop is still projected to grow by 0.06 percent next year.
