Iran-Pak co-op to reduce foreign influence in region: Analyst

Islamabad, July 20, IRNA -- Former Secretary General of Foreign Affairs and former ambassador has said that mutual cooperation between Iran and Pakistan can reduce foreign influence in the region.
Muhammad Akram Zaki said that presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan creates problems in the region.
Akram Zaki said that Pakistan and Iran relationship is very friendly. “We have old historical ties and religious affinity, we share common interests in region”, he said.
He called for increasing economic and trade relations between Iran and Pakistan.
He was of the view that there is desire on both sides of closer relationship. “To deal with the uncertainty in region we have to enhance mutual cooperation”, he said.
“We appreciate the tripartite efforts by Iran to solve the issue of Afghanistan”, said the former diplomat.
Highlighting the importance of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Akram Zaki said, ‘We have made special efforts to make the ECO an effective forum and now it has become a group of 10 countries’.
“It can become a very powerful economic unit and Iran can play a very effective role in this regards”, he believed.
Akram Zaki said presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan creates problems in the region. “They will not fully withdraw from the region”, he believed.
Expressing his opinion he said that there is a bright future of Iran-Pakistan relationship. “We must go ahead with the gas pipeline project with Iran”, said Akram Zaki.
He thanked Iran for offering 1000 MW of electricity to Pakistan.
Akram Zaki has an outstanding record of distinguished public service as a career diplomat and as a Senator.
During his diplomatic career he served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, USA, Nigeria, the Philippines and later became the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs./end
