INTEGRATED TEAM HANDLING CASE OF FIVE AUSTRALIAN ILLEGAL ENTRANTS
Jayapura, Indonesia, Sept 15 (ANTARA) - The case of five Australians who entered Merauke illegally is being handled by an integrated team consisting of local police, immigration, personnel of Merauke air base and the airport management, a local official said.
"The case has been entrusted to an integrated team considering that they entered Indonesia aboard a small V-68 airchraft without the required travel documents," a Merauke immigration fficial, Freddy Manus SH, said when contacted by phone from Jayapura.
About the immigration aspect of the case, Manus said, his side was still waiting for a guidance from the Immigration Directorate General in Jakarta including further steps to be taken against the five Australian intruders.
Carrying a pilot, co-pilot and three passengers, the aircraft had left Horn Island, Australia, on Friday and arrived in Merauke at about 12:10 local time.
At present, they were staying in isolation in one of the hotels in Merauke City, Manus said.
On a separate occasion, Merauke city police chief Adjunct Commissioner Made Djuliadi said his side had instructed intelligence unit personnel to help the investigation of the case as the five Australians had arrived in the city without any official documents.
"We don't know the motive behind their intrusion, as neither the crew nor the aircraft is provided with documents like security clearence and flight approval," Made said.
In the meantime, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade admitted that five Australian citizens had been held in Merauke, Papua, for having entered Indonesian territory without proper travel documents.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Sunday the five Australians including two women arrived in Merauke aboard a small plane on Friday morning.
The DFAT as quoted by the ABC stated that the Australians had been arrested because they held no flight, security and immigration permits. They were now still under the supervision of the Indonesian authorities pending the issuance of the permits.
The Australian embassy in Jakarta has given consular assistance to the five who arrived in Papua from Horn island off Cape York, which is an hour flight away.
The five Australians were identified as William Henry (pilot), Vera Scott Bloxam (co-pilot), Hubert Hofer, Karen Burke and Ken Rowald Mortimer (passengers).
