LEGISLATOR ASKS GOVT TO PROVIDE MORE SCHLARSHIPS FOR INDIGENT STUDENTS

Jakarta, Sept 15 (ANTARA) - A member of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Budget Committee, Aan Rohanah, urged the government to provide more scholarships for well-performing students who are unable to pay their school fees in relation with the inceased allocation for education in the 2009 State Budget.

"The goverment should allocate more financial assistance for students incapable of paying their school fees," Rohanah said here Monday at the parliament building.

Attention and a budget allocation must also be given to International Olympic medal winners in mathematics, science, technology, athletics, artists and those who had brought pride to the country internationally.

The legislator from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) said the financial aid should ideally be given continuously instead of temporarily during the student's lenghth of study.

He said apart from increasing the budget for education, the government should also guarantee students access to any state university in the country.

"State institutes of higher learning must open their doors to students coming from all kinds of environment," he said.

At present institutes of higher learning were charging extrordinarily high entrance fees and society was forced to subsidize college entrance fees, a task which should actually be borne by the government.

"The prevailing conditions increasingly amount to the commercialization, capitalization and liberalization of higher education," he said.
