Official Lauds Trend of Development in South Pars Gas Field

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian oil officials announced that development projects in the South Pars gas field are witnessing good progress and the country's gas production will increase remarkably once new phases come on stream.
The South Pars gas field is shared by Iran and Qatar. The Iranian share, which is divided into 24 phases, has about 14 trillion cubic meters of gas, or about eight percent of the total world reserves, and more than 18 billion barrels of liquefied natural gas resources.

Managing-Director of Iran's Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) Mousa Souri told Shana news agency that the eight operating phases of South Pars gas field are currently yielding 245 million cubic meters of gas each day.

The gas production capacity from the field will hit 285 million cubic meters on a daily basis once phases 9 and 10 of the gas field are launched.

He also pointed to the great strides made in the development of phases 11 to 24 of the field, and said such unprecedented progress has infuriated the country's enemies.

Souri noted that the contract to develop phase 11 of South Pars has been signed with China National Petroleum Corporation. The Chinese side has embarked on conducting feasibility studies on the project, and has given an assurance that the engineering work would be completed before long. Phase 11 of South Pars gas field is expected to produce 56 million cubic meters of gas per day.

POGC's managing director went on to say that early production from phase 12 of the gas field will start on schedule in October 2012. The phase has progressed by 54 percent, against 59 percent under the timeline, and the delay will be compensated in coming months, he stated.

"Offshore sector, pipeline and gas refining installations of phase 12 will become operational next year," the POGC official further explained.

On the progress in phases 13, 22, 23 and 24 of South Pars gas field, Souri said the phases have been developed sooner than the envisioned 35-month period. Phases 13, 22, 23 and 24 of South Pars gas field will yield 56 million cubic meters of gas each day once they are inaugurated.

He concluded that well drilling and laying pipelines for the phases 15 and 16 of South Pars are going on with good progress, and the gas processing plant for the phases will hopefully launch in the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21).

Iran has 137.6 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and 29.61 trillion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, ranking third in the world in oil reserves and second in gas reserves.
