Pusan Film Festival

Pusan, 16 September 2008, (Khabar) - "A Present to Stalin" film opens 13th Pusan International Film Festival. A Kazakh production entitled "A Present to Stalin" will open the 13th Pusan International Film Festival after it was selected from a total of 200 motion pictures and will be premiered on the 2nd of October. The plot is based on real events and real characters.

The
main idea of the film is the hospitality of the Kazakh land, its peoples'
tolerance and their friendship tested by the great tragedy of the Stalin
purges. The movie is a postmodernism picture containing many parallel
storylines and film metaphors. The film creators are certain that their
production deserves to open the Korean Film Festival and are eager to share
details of the future event.

Azamat Ashimov, director, :
- We will walk the Red Carpet with our heads proudly raised, holding the
Kazakh flag. This is the first time a Kazakh-made film has achieved such
success in the international arena.

Playing the lead role of a small Jewish orphaned boy, Sashka, was not an
easy thing to do. The film director had to reduce the 9-year old boy actor,
Dalen Shintemirov, to tears and only by the end of the film did he abandon
this practice.

Rustem Abdrashev, director of "A Present to Stalin" film:
- The last shooting day was the most difficult because I saw how tired the
boy was. On the last shooting day we had to shoot everything which we had
not had the time to shoot before, so we were running around all day long.
When I said it was over the boy burst into tears because he was so happy -
that was so touching.

After the world premiere at the Pusan Film Festival, "A Present to Stalin"
will be shown to Kazakh and Russian audiences before it goes on release in
the 14 countries which had signed contracts with Kazakhstan. The authors are
certain that the film will be a success abroad.
