Health Council Plans Database of Non-Communicable Diseases
Doha, July 26 (QNA) - Qatar's Supreme Council of Health (SCH) plans to make a database on the incidence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) which cause the highest number of deaths.
The project, to be completed by the end of 2011, will generate data on the impact and risk factors of these diseases in order to set health service priorities, English-language daily (The Peninsula) reported Tuesday.
SCH Public Health Director Dr Sheikh Mohammed AL Thani said, "The survey aims to have a data base on chronic NCDs and risk factors here. It will help forecast the burden of the disease to support health services here and help in planning to fix public health priorities. The survey will help to establish a national strategy for prevention and control of NCDs by curbing unhealthy behaviours."
The Director who opened here a workshop to plan for the national STEPwise survey of NCD and risk factors, citing WHO statistics, said, "These diseases account for high number of deaths and hence cause a great burden on public health."
Experts from SCH, Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care, Qatar Statistical Authority and social research institute at Qatar University among others, discussed at the workshop a questionnaire that will be used in the survey.
SCH, Health Promotion and Non-Communicable Diseases Manager Dr Al Anoud bint Mohammed Al Thani said, "The survey will only focus on Qataris for now to help us know the NCD burden and analyse the changes that happen later.
"Around 2,000 people, who account for 10% of the Qatari population, will form the cluster sample from various municipalities. We will begin after the conclusion of the Hajj season so as to cover maximum number of Qataris.
"The survey will check on the demographic data and focus on history of risk factors. Physical activity, history of diseases like CVD, diabetes, high blood pressure and medications."
The survey will be STEPwise, according to WHO recommendation, as the approach focuses on obtaining core data on the established risk factors that determine the major disease burden.
The STEPS Instrument covers three different levels of 'steps' of risk factor assessment. The first one involves questionnaire on NCD and risk factors in individuals. The second one will focus on physical measurements to check on Body Mass Index, waist-hip ratio among the other. As the third step, biochemical measurement will be done to analyse blood, glucose and lipid content.
"The tests will be done for the people do not know of the risks they face. In case we find issues, they would be referred to PHC for treatment and follow-up. All the GCC countries have done similar surveys except for Qatar and UAE, which will do it this year," she said.
"The survey will be done using the electronic PDA (Personal Digital Assistants). A committee has been established under WHO recommendation to check people with NCD. They will monitor the survey work daily and help in writing reports and analysing. Based on the findings, we can modify the strategies to which methods that work the best with the population," said Dr Anoud.
NCDs cause more than 60% of deaths all over the world and a quarter of these take place before the age of 60.
In Qatar NCDs like injuries/accidents, cardiovascular diseases, cancers and diabetes are the causes of the highest number of deaths. The risk factors are linked to eating habits, lifestyle and behaviour. (QNA)
