Qatar Produces 8000 MW of Electric Power

Doha, July 26 (QNA) - Qatar produces 8000 megawatts (MW) of electric power, whose 5300MW are consumed during peak times, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation "KAHRAMAA" President , Engineer Issa Hilal Al Kuwari said.
Al Kuwari made his remarks, in a press statement, on the sideline of a honoring ceremony organised last night by Kahramaa for long service employees, excellent graduates, and leading department in Qatarization.
It is theoretically possible to say that Qatar's surplus electricity production (SEP) is 2700MW, but in practice there are a number of factors that could affect it such as the operating reserve, said Al Kuwari, adding that the current level of electricity output is enough to meet domestic demand.
The electrical loads are in good condition due to the excellent performance of electricity supply compared to previous years, said Al Kuwari, who expects maintaining the same level of output.
During the summer, Qatar has exported 200MW of surplus electricity to the GCC joint electrical network, which determines the beneficiary country, he added.
Speaking about KAHRAMAA's plans for the future, Al Kuwari said the corporation is studying the possibility of establishing a new facility D Power Plant to its power transmission network.
On the submarine power link for electric power transmission from two power plants which are Ras Abu Fontas and Ras Laffan, he said the project implementation is progressing according to schedule, adding that the project will also link Ras Abu Fontas super substation with West Bay.
The GCC electricity grid generates electricity in emergency situations, Al Kuwari said, adding that linking the grid with the electricity system through the European system-Arab Turkey would enhance the opportunities for electricity export.
The Authority to develop the GCC Power grid is also considering the possibility to establish an electricity stock exchange, he said.
The Sultanate of Oman will be the sixth partner in the GCC grid after Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE, which was fully integrated into the GCC power grid in April, said Al Kuwari, adding that the system lay the foundation for a common GCC energy market.
On Kaharamaa's policies to reduce electricity and water use, he stated that the corporate is implementing steps and leading campaigns to promote and raise awareness about usage and unnecessary wastage of electricity and water.
Kahramaa is as well supporting the policy dedicated to sustainable building (green building) as a part of the national sustainable development program , he said.
Green buildings often include measures to reduce energy consumption therefore Kahramaa has a key role in this program, he continued, referring to the agreement signed recently with the Gulf Organization for research and development.
