Pakistan daily urges govt to adopt principled position on US

Islamabad, July 27, IRNA-- Pakistani English news daily on Tuesday urged the government to adopt principled position on relations with the US.
‘The Nation’, in its editorial comments said that Pakistan is determined to maintain its sovereignty at all costs and would not accept the supremacy of any country.
Earlier Pakistan Foreign Minister Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar had admitted 'difference of opinion' with the United States.
'Supremacy is out of question. Pakistan will not accept anyone's supremacy. Pakistan is a sovereign state and will keep intact its sovereignty and strategic importance in the region through the pursuit of an effective foreign policy,' she said.
“It is heartening to know that the Pakistani rulers have at last realised the importance of adopting principled position on relations with the US, as is evident from the various statements that they have lately been making”, said the ‘The Nation’.
“Somehow, our decision makers had failed to make out the significance of the fairly good glimpses of Washington’s intentions that it had been giving since long or they simply overlooked these signs to keep themselves in the seat of power, regardless of national interests and public opinion”, opined ‘The Nation’.
The newspaper said one would expect that Pakistan would firmly stick to the position it has now taken and the impression etched on the minds of political analysts and the people by its policies of subservience to the American wishes would be erased.
“The US, as a consequence, had begun taking liberties not only in suggesting the direction of our foreign policy, but also by openly interfering in our internal affairs”, it said.
“Our active association in the war on terror has done us immeasurable harm, to the law and order situation, the economy, the people’s welfare; in fact, every field”, it said.
‘The Nation’ said it is time we went for developing and strengthening relations with genuine friends without the slightest hesitation and delay./end
