Senate committee confirms Sung Kim as envoy to Seoul.
WASHINGTON, July 27 (Yonhap) -- A U.S. Senate committee has confirmed Sung Kim as ambassador to South Korea, but it remains uncertain when the nominee will be confirmed by the entire Senate, a congressional official said Wednesday.
"He was confirmed by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations yesterday," Rosanna Kim, a committee staffer, told Yonhap News Agency.
It is difficult to predict when the ambassador-designate will receive full Senate confirmation, she added, with Capitol Hill engrossed in debt ceiling talks.
"It's up to majority leaders in the Senate," she said.
The summer recess of Congress begins on Aug. 6.
Congressional sources said there will be no major problem for the career diplomat to be confirmed by the Senate before the deadline.
The 51-year-old will become the first Korea-born U.S. ambassador to Seoul if confirmed. Kim, fluent in Korean, is known for his expertise on North Korean and Seoul-Washington alliance issues.
The committee held a confirmation hearing for Kim a week ago, in which he said he would draw on his experience to "expand and enhance the bond between our two countries."
