POLICE NAME SUSPECT IN PASURUAN TITHE DISTRIBUTION TRAGEDY
Jakarta, Sept 16 (ANTARA) - The local police in East Java have named H Farouk as a suspect in the tithe distribution tragedy which claimed the lives of 21 people and injured 13 others in Pasuruan on Monday.
National Police spokesman Insp Gen Abubakar Nataprawira said here on Tuesday Farouk was a son of businessman and philanthropist H Syaikhon who was in charge of distributing the tithes.
"Farouk was the organizer of the tithe distribution," he said.
He said the suspect would be charged based on Article 359 of the Criminal Code on negligence causing the loss of other people's lives.
Farouk was named a suspect after police questioned 18 witnesses, including five tithe recipients.
Nataprawira said investigators would also ask for explanations from doctors to ascertain the cause of the death of the 21 victims.
He said the location used to distribute the alms was not suitable as the gate was only wide enough to let one person in at a time while there were thousands of people who had come to location for the tithes.
Therefore, police was asking people to distribute tithes through alms bodies or alms committees in order to avoid the repetition of the same tragedy.
Twenty-one women were killed and dozens of others injured in a stampede in the remote East Java district of Pasuruan on Monday as crowds rushed to receive Rp30,000 in cash per person from philanthropists Soikhon
