MINISTER CALLS ON ALMS COLLECTING AGENCIES TO BE TRANSPARENT
Jakarta, Sept 16 (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni called on alms collecting agencies in the country to give transparent information to the public about the funds they were managing.
In his explanation given to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during a cabinet meeting here Tuesday, the minister admitted that the public did not as yet trust the existing agencies.
"We already have alms collecting agencies but it must be admitted that many people do not fully trust them," he said.
Therefore, Basyuni said, he was appealing to the agencies to introspect and do whatever it takes to win the people's trust.
At least 21 people were killed in a stampede during distribution of tithes amounting to Rp20,000 (almost US$2) in cash per person by a resident of Pasuruan, East Java, on Monday.
Basyuni said the Pasuruan incident was another indication of the public's distrust in official tithe or alms collecting agencies.
To ensure that alms were received by the right persons, many people choose to distribute the assistance by themselves, he said.
But the minister also said the distribution of alms to a large number of people in Pasuruan without a permit was unjustified.
He said he had instructed all regional religious affairs offices in the country to give information to the public regarding the correct way of extending alms.
