NINE THAI, VIETNAMESE VESSELS ARRESTED IN NATUNA WATERS
Jakarta, Sept 16 (ANTARA) - Indonesian authorities have arrested nine Thai and Vietnamese fishing vessels for poaching in Indonesia's Natuna waters, a maritime and fishery official said.
"Actually there were 11 ships arrested, but we escorted two of them out of Indonesia's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) because their conditions were bad," Aji Sularso, director general for fisheries and maritime resources control affairs of the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry (DKP), said here on Tuesday.
Two which were escorted out of the EEZ weer of Vietnam.
Sularso said that the ships carried about 180 crew members.
He said that of the nine ships arrested, four came from Thailand and five others from Vietnam.
Three of them --which had a capacity of 110 Gross tonnage (GT) and were able to carry some 15 to 20 tons of fish-- were dragged to Muara Baru, Jakarta, from Ranai, Riau Islands.
Sularso said that with the arrest of the 11 fishing boats a loss of about Rp33 billion to the state could be prevented. The director general predicted there were still foreign ships which were operating in the Natuna waters to steal fish.
"The three ships each has 15 crew members, not including their skippers and machine chamber chiefs (KKM). They will be deported soon," he said.
Up to now, the DKP has arrested 186 foreign ships poaching in Indonesian waters and secure the state from a threat of losses amounting to Rp600 million.
