Clinton tells Zardari US values Pakistan’s partnerhip

Islamabad, July 30, IRNA -- US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, telephoned Pakistan's President, Asif Zardari, and the two leaders discussed bilateral ties, regional situation and fight against militancy, presidential Spokesperson said on Friday.

Secretary Clinton, who called late Thursday night, said that the United States valued its partnership with Pakistan and that it supported democracy in the country, spokesman for the President, Farhatullah Babar said.

President Zardari said that Pakistan looked forward to continued partnership and productive engagement with the US on the basis of mutual interest, mutual respect and sovereign equality, he said.

Hillarly Clinton made the call at a time when ties between the two allies are lowest ebb especially after the US administration decision to block 800 million military aid.

The aid was deferred after Pakistan reportedly withdrew over 100 US militray trainers and refused visas to CIA operatives. The action was also aimed at mounting pressure on Islamabad to take more steps against the militants.

Hillary Clinton Thursday criticized the Republican’s bill movement in the Senate to impose conditions on Pakistan’s aid, reports said.

In her letter to the member of the House Committee on Foreign Relations, she made it clear that such move will ruin the efforts she did in the recent past to win Pakistan favours in the war against terrorism.

She also said that any move to impose conditions on aid to Pakistan hurt her cause./end
