Iran to Intensify Security Measures to Protect Academic Figures against Terrorism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi announced that the country plans to step up security measures to protect its elites and scientists against possible foreign terrorist attacks.
"Certainly, the country's security authorities will expand their efforts for the security of scientists and academic figures," Vahidi told FNA on Sunday.
He blamed Israeli spy agency (Mossad) and other foreign intelligence agencies for the assassination of the Iranian scientists and elites in recent months.
Noting the objectives sought by these terrorist attacks, the Iranian minister explained, "Naturally, the enemy seeks create fear and horror in the country in a bid to hinder the Islamic Iran's access to scientific achievements."
In January, the Iranian Vice-President for Science and Technology had also said that the country had formed a special team to boost security for its scientists and researchers
"A special security task force has been formed to protect our scientists," Nasrin Soltankhah told reporters at the time.
She noted that the security measures would cover all scientists registered by the National Foundation for Elites.
The move by Iran came after several Iranian scientists and university professors were assassinated.
In July, Iran's young scientist, Daryoush Rezayeenejad, a brilliant post graduate student in the field of Power and Electronics, was gunned down in the country's capital city of Tehran by two unknown terrorists.
On November 29, 2010, two other Iranian academics became the target of terrorist attacks.
Unidentified terrorists detonated bombs in the vehicles of Dr. Majid Shahriari and Professor Fereidoon Abbasi in separate locations in Tehran. Shahriari was killed immediately but Abbasi and his wife sustained injuries.
On December 2, the Iranian Intelligence Ministry announced that Mossad, CIA and MI6 spy agencies played a role in those attacks.
