Trial of Detained US Nationals Held in Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- The court hearing of the three American nationals who were detained on spying charges after crossing Iran-Iraq borders illegally was held here in Tehran on Sunday.
The fourth and last trial session to address the charges against Shane Bauer, Joshua Fattal and Sarah Shourd was held in the Branch 15 of Tehran's Revolution Court.
The lawyer of the three US nationals expressed the hope that they would soon be released.
Massoud Shafiee told press tv that he hoped they would be sentenced to time served.
"According to the law, the court is obligated to issue the verdict within one week," Shafiee said.
Shane Bauer, Joshua Fattal and Sarah Shourd were arrested in July 2009 after illegally crossing the border into Iran from the mountains of northern Iraq's Kurdistan region.
They were later charged with espionage after Tehran prosecutor's office announced that it possessed "compelling evidence" indicating that the three Americans were cooperating with US intelligence agencies.
Iran released Shourd on a bail of $500,000 in September 2010, 14 months after her arrest. The decision was taken due to the detainee's health condition.
