Iran court to issue verdict on US suspects by next week: Lawyer

Tehran, Aug 1, IRNA – The Lawyer for the three US nationals arrested in Iran on espionage charges said Monday that Iran’s court would make a final decision on their case by next week.

The lawyer, Massoud Shafee, told IRNA that the third hearing for the suspects was held in Tehran Sunday morning at the 15th Branch of the Revolutionary Court.

Shafee said as the session was held behind closed doors, he was not allowed to disclose any details about it.

However, he expressed satisfaction over the process of the hearing.

Josh Fattal, Shane Bauer, and Sarah Shourd were arrested by Iranian security forces in July 2009 charged with espionage after illegally crossing into Iran from Iraq.

Shourd was freed on a five-billion-rial bail in September 2010 and returned to the United States.

Shafee said that Shourd was released as she had submitted medical documents. However, the lawyer said that the court’s verdict “will be for all three suspects.”/end
