Govt, Oppn agree on discussing price rise

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) After two days of disruption,
Indian Parliament is expected to function normally Wednesday
with the government and Opposition Tuesday reaching a
compromise of taking up a debate on prise rise under rules
that entail voting.
Under the agreement reached after a few rounds of talks,
the discussion will be taken up in the Lok Sabha (lower house
of Indian parliament) Wednesday while the Rajya Sabha (upper
house of Indian parliament) will have the debate next week.
A consensus resolution, to be moved in both the Houses,
has also been worked out. It reads -- "Despite repeated
discussions on price rise in the House, the burden of price
rise on the common man is continuing. Expressing deep concern
over price rise, this House calls upon the government to take
immediate effective steps to check inflation that will give
relief to the common man."
The Opposition had earlier insisted that the resolution
should read as -- "government has continued to increase the
burden of price rise on the common man" and that the "House
condemns the insensitivity of this government" on price rise.
The discussion will start at 1200 hours (IST), soon after
the Question Hour. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader
and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha and Janata Dal
(United) (JDU) President Sharad Yadav will move the resolution
on behalf of their respective parties, Leader of Opposition
Sushma Swaraj said.
Sinha will open the debate and Finance Minister Pranab
Mukherjee will reply to it, Parliamentary Affairs Minister
Pawan Kumar Bansal told reporters.
Besides, Sinha and Yadav, K S Rao of Congress has also
given notice for such a discussion.
The same resolution will be moved in the Rajya Sabha
next week and will be followed by a debate and voting (under
Rule 167). BJP MP Prakash Javadekar will move the resolution
on behalf of his party.
