Salehi calls for freedom of Iranian nationals held in US custody

Tehran, Aug 7, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Saturday called for release of Iranian nationals being held in US custody in absence of legal proceedings by the United States justice department.
Salehi made the remarks during joint press conference with his counterpart from Benin Nassirou Bako-Arifari.
Salehi said that Ms Shahrzad Mir Gholi-Khani is one of the individuals being held in the United States custody without judicial proceedings.
“We are now following up the case through various channels and hope to conclude the case with success,” he said.
On the current status of two American accused of espionage -- Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal, he expressed the hope their case would lead to their freedom.
On Saudi Arabia, he said the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks expansion of ties and cooperation with Saudi Arabia.
Salehi said that Saudi Arabia is important country in the Persian Gulf and the Muslim World and that Tehran-Riyadh cooperation would lead to restoration of peace, stability and security of the entire region.
On a commentary made by a Saudi daily against Iran, he said “That was an article written by an un-named author in a Saudi newspaper and we don't want to react to any comments appeared in any paper.”
He stressed that the statement was non-official position made by a Saudi individual.
He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia are two strategic countries in the region keen to broaden ties and cooperation but some try to get fish from troubled water.
Whenever the Saudi officials express official stand, Iran will give its official respond, he said.
He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran and UN human rights council have a very close cooperation and that some try to exploit Iranian human rights issue, but to no avail.
All admit the good status of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran compared with other countries, he underlined.
US has blatantly violated human rights in Afghanistan and Iraq and the US officials have committed inhuman tortures in Abu Ghraib, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Iran is determined to continue cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights Council, Salehi said.
On current development in Syria, he said some western countries try to create doubt whether Iran has a role in Syria developments. It is unfair.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, Syria and Turkey are members of the same family who play significant role in the Middle East region, he said.
He criticized the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for heavy bombardment of Libyan people killing women and children in over 15,000 sorties of air strikes under the pretext of the United Nations Security Council Resolution calling for no-fly zone in Libya.
He said that the Western governments should have been noticed that mass killing of people in Libya by NATO was an improper policy.
Iran’s principled policy is based on supporting the legitimate rights of all nations, he said.
On expansion of relations with African continent, he said Iran attaches importance to expansion of ties with the African countries./end
