PRESIDENT CALLS ON FISHERMEN NOT TO DAMAGE ENVIRONMENT
Cirebon, Indonesia, Sept 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on fishermen to pay attention to the environment and ecological balance in their sea fish breeding activity.
"I ask fishermen not to use fish breeding methods that cause damage to the ecosystem and environmental balance," the president said in a dialog with fishermen and salted fish traders at Kejawanan Fishery Port in Cirebon on Wedneday.
The president said fishermen's fish breeding businesses in Cirebon seemed to be running well and therefore needed to be continuously developed.
On the occasion, Mulyadi, a traditional fisherman complained that the local fish auction market (TPI) was not yet operating fully because of lack of funds, Therfore, he asked that funds for the TPI be increased so that fishermen could receive full payment when they auctioned their fish.
In the meantime, Tarmini, a salted fish trader, complained about the shortage of raw materials so that he could not meet his customers' demand for salted fish and this made his business unable to develop well.
The president said that the central government would cooperate with the West Java administration to help solve the fishermen's problems.
The Kejwanan fishery Port covers an area of 74.5 hectares and accommodates some 6,388 fishermen. It handles 250 tons of fish per day.
