Spectre of floods loom large in entire WB
Kolkata(West Bengal), Aug 10 (PTI) Spectre of floods
loomed large over south and north Bengal Wednesday with most
of the major rivers flowing above danger mark amidst massive
release of water from DVC reservoirs as weatherman forecast
heavy to very heavy rains in next 48 hours.
The DVC discharged 82,850 cusecs Wednesday afternoon,
after its record release of 87,000 cusecs Tuesday, from its
dams at Maithon and Panchet on the Damodar river, Irrigation
Minister Manas Bhuinya said in esatern Indian state West
Bengal.
The massive water release coupled with heavy rainfall has
caused a flood like situation in six districts -- Howrah,
Hooghly, East Midnapore, North and South 24-parganas and
Burdwan where three persons died due to wall collapse.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was personally
monitoring the situation and contacts were being made with the
DVC and authorities of the affected districts, Bhuinya said
adding flood waters breached several embankments.
A major breach of 385-metre was caused in the
embankment of the Brahmani river's right bank in Birbhum
district, and of this, 100-metre breach was of serious nature,
threatening with inundation large areas.
Breaches were reported from Marpur under Rampurhat
block-II, Pitidanaga village under Nalhati-II in Birbhum
district. Rising Mayureswari river has caused a wide breach on
its embankment in Murshidabad district, Bhuniya said.
