Qatar Red Crescent Launches Emergency Medical Relief Program in Somalia
Mogadishu, August 10 (QNA) - As part of Qatari relief efforts, Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS) has launched an emergency medical relief program for the displaced in Somalia escaping from drought and famine in their home areas, described as being the worst in half a century.
The program provides five mobile clinic equipped with the basic medical equipment and drugs and supervised by a number of integrated, multi-disciplinary medical teams including a doctor, an assistant doctor and two nurses for each, the organisation said Wednesday in a press statement.
The medical teams are providing basic health-care services in the most vulnerable areas, particularly the camps located in the Somali capital Mogadishu and its environs, Bay and Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia, declared last month by the United Nations to be famine zone.
While the critical cases are referred to Banaadir hospital, according to the statement.
The Qatari humanitarian organization is working towards establishing three new health care centers and three therapeutic feeding centers in a number of villages in Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle and Baidoa, the capital of Bay region in southern Somalia, it added.
These centers aim to provide treatment of severe malnutrition and carry out medical follow up on an ongoing basis after finishing the treatment, said the statement.
Established in 1978, QRCS is a humanitarian organization that strives to assist and empower individuals and communities in need, regardless of their place or origin.
It operates both locally and internationally and has ongoing relief and development projects in a number of countries.
As a member of the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent, it abides by the seven fundamental principles of humanitarian work, which are: Humanity, Impartiality, Independence, Neutrality, Unity, Universality, and Voluntary Service. (QNA)
