8,000 cyber attacks on CWG ticketing and scoring systems:Menon

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) There were 8,000 cyber attacks on
the Commonwealth Games' ticketing and scoring systems during
the event last year but were repelled, National Security
Advisor Shivshankar Menon said here.
"There were 8,000 attacks on the ticketing, timing and
scoring systems and we managed to tackle them all," Menon said
at the Prem Bhatia Memorial Lecture here.
The NSA was replying to a query on the way India was
preparing for the cyber warfare as its websites and networks
were frequently under attacks from hackers.
On the issue of websites being hacked by the cyber
pirates, he said, "Websites are meant to be hit. you want the
world to see them and if they hit it and deface them, it shows
them in poor light and not us."
The NSA said the main issue before the Government was to
maintain the security of critical data and networks where
information is stored.
Menon said it was "very hard" to deal with the issue in
the old way of investigating and there was a long way to go
before being fully capable of dealing with the menace.
He said internationally also, the laws were not defined
to tackle the issue as "it is still not clear whether the
attacks on US networks is considered to be an international
crime."
The NSA said that to continue this relationship the two
sides will require better communication and there should be
"no misunderstanding of each other's actions and motives."
Menon said this would require our media and commentators
also to learn the virtues of moderation.
"The Chinese can't believe that these media and
commentators don't speak authoritatively for the country as
does their controlled media and academia," he said.
The NSA said India must recognize that other countries
too could have similar imperatives as its own and their own
reasons for what they do.
"Why create self-fulfilling prophesies of conflict with
powerful neighbours like China," he said.
Talking about the issues which would help its growth, the
NSA said India needs to work for a peaceful periphery.
"We have an interest in peace and prosperity of our
neighbours, removing extremism and threats from their soil, as
were doing successfully with Bangladesh," he said, adding that
this would help in working together for the joint development
of South Asia.
Menon said it was essential for the country to work
towards building essential resources such as oil, mineral
and high technology to ensure continued access and build up
strategic stockpiles and alternatives.
"This requires a sustained cooperative engagement with
the world, of the type that we are attempting in Africa or
South East Asia. When we have physical access, Central Asia
too becomes important for us," he said.
On rising inflation in the country, Menon said what is
being seen in the country today is caused by the injection of
liquidity by the US, China and other major economies to
promote their own economic recovery after the crisis of 2008."
