Hyundai's Solaris top-selling foreign car in Russia

SEOUL (Yonhap) - Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading carmaker, said Friday that its Solaris subcompact remained the best-selling foreign car in Russia for the fourth straight month in July.
The carmaker said sales of the Solaris reached 8,959 units last month, far more than those for such rivals as Renault's Logan and Ford's Focus.
Hyundai said that for the first seven month of this year, sales of the Solaris reached 49,310 units, second only to the Logan that sold 49,684 units.
It said the strong sales figure is noteworthy since Solaris started reaching Russian consumers in February and was not sold for the full seven month period. In June, sales of the subcompact reached a record 10,833, the highest monthly sales figure reached by a foreign car sold in Russia.
The Solaris is a localized version of the Accent and made at Hyundai's St. Petersburg plant. The four-door sedan is powered by either a 1.4-liter engine capable of producing 109 horsepower or a larger 1.6-liter unit with 124 horsepower.
Hyundai, meanwhile, said that its overall car sales, buoyed by consumer demand for the Solaris, reached 12,827 units in July, making it the fourth largest foreign car brand in Russia.
U.S. automaker General Motors Co. ranked No. 1 with sales reaching 15,824 units last month, followed by 14,693 sold by Kia Motors Corp., an affiliate of Hyundai. Renault sales came in third with 13,455 vehicles, with Nissan trailing in fifth place.
The South Korean carmaker said in the January-July period, its sales surged 78 percent compared to the previous year, with Kia sales also jumping 40 percent.
