Rs 1.25 lakh cr required to complete ongoing railway projects

New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) The ongoing railway projects
in India would require Rs 1.25 lakh crore for completion, the
Parliament was informed on Friday.
"As on April 1, 2011, Railways have a huge throw forward
of ongoing projects under new lines, gauge conversions and
doubling across the country requiring about Rs 1,25,000 crore
for completion," Minister of State for Railways Bharatsinh
Solanki said in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Parliament).
In a written reply, he said paucity of funds, delay in
land acquisition, court cases and forestry clearance are some
of the reasons for the delay in completion of the projects.
"Failure of contracts and contractors, adverse law and
order conditions and non availability of material and other
economical reasons are affecting the progress," he said.
In such a scenario, he said, no fixed time frame for
completion of all the projects would be feasible.
He, though, said the targets for the projects are
generally fixed on a yearly basis, based on the availability
of resources and progress and many of the projects get
completed in phases.
