Tensions in Iran-Russia ties to benefit bullying powers: envoy

Tehran, Aug 14, IRNA – Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Reza Sajjadi said any tension in Tehran-Russia ties would only benefit the bullying powers.
In an exclusive interview with 'Iran' newspaper held at the threshold of visit to Russia of the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi, Sajjadi stressed that the US will be delighted by any kind of tension between Russia and Iran.
He noted that Iran shared interests with Russia in three strategic regions of Caucasus, Central Asia and the Caspian Sea in which the NATO too is focusing on and carries out special planning for.
He said any kind of tension between Iran and Russia in these three regions would only provide a good chance for the NATO to seek a direct presence there while good relations between the two countries would deprive the NATO from such an opportunity and the regional countries, too, will have no reason to seek a NATO support.
Therefore, he noted, it is easy to see that expansion and deepening of cooperation between Tehran and Moscow would benefit the regional states since it would help boost their stability and security.
Referring to the fact that Moscow needed western ties for security ties, Sajjadi noted that the Russian statesmen were of the opinion that a low economic growth rate may lead to internal crises. A notion which, he stressed, sometimes encouraged Russian officials to adopt unfriendly stands towards Iran.
He reiterated that due to Russia’s high capabilities, there are many great opportunities for developing and further expanding bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries.
Commenting on influence of the recent Islamic uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, inspired by the Islamic Revolution in Iran, on Tehran-Moscow ties, Sajjadi said that Russian authorities and policy-makers have always regarded Iran as a key element in the regional equations and developments and therefore are interested in cooperating with the Islamic Republic.
He said the Russian officials, having witnessed the reluctance of western countries towards fulfilling their commitments towards Moscow after the signing of START-2 treaty, embarked on restoring their old relations with Tehran which were somehow tarnished, clear outcomes of which are the recent exchange of diplomatic delegations between the two countries./end
