GUS DUR: BLAME FOR TITHE TRAGEDY SHOULD BE PUT ON POLICE
Surabaya, Sept 18 (ANTARA) - Chairman of the National Awakening Party's Advisory Council Abdurahman Wahid alias Gus Dur believed that the blame for the tithe tragedy in Pasuruan, East Java, should be put on the police.
"It is not the tithe distribution committee that should be blamed, as it is police negligence. The committee failed to establish coordination with the police in the tithe distribution, because the police normally asks for a reward," he said here on Thursday evening.
He was commenting on the tithe distribution tragedy in which 21 mostly old women were trampled to death on Monday (Sept 15).
"If the police was involved in the tithe distribution, this tragedy would not occur. Usually the police would ask for money to to their job. Therefore it is the mistake of the police, rather than the committee," he said.
Until now, the police headquarters said police investigators in Pasuruan had named HM Faroug (28), son of H. Syaichon, a suspect. But his mother was shocked to learn that her son was declared a suspect.
At least 21 women were killed in a stempede and tens others sustained serious injuries, as thousands of mostly poor people coming from the city of Pasuruan and surrounding areas were jostling to get a turn to receive Rp30,000, which was later reduced to Rp 20,000 as more and more people were coming.
The H Syaichon family every year on the occasion of the fasting month distributed tithes to the poor.
