Pakistan’s Aviation and Travel Industry Conference

Karachi, August 16, 2011 (PPI): PIA plans to establish a Planetarium and aviation gallery in Moenjodaro,says Deputy Managing Director PIA, Salim Sayani.

Addressing conference sponsored by PIA and organized by Investment & Marketing Conferences at local hotel on Pakistan Aviation & Travel Industry: Synergy & Growth he spoke on Re-branding of Pakistan through innovation in travel industry, perception vs reality, role of travel and tourism industry (Past, Present, future), role of public private partnership.

He discussed annual arrival of passengers (share of countries in percentage terms) within the region. India has 48% share in regional tourism industry whereas Pakistan has 4%, Sri Lanka 7%, Bangladesh 4%, Maldives 8% & Iran 24%. Aggressive marketing, better tourist services and facilities can improve the situation.

He said there was time when Pakistan ranked among top 25 tourist destination in the world. In past 10 years subsequent to September 11, this ranking continued to decline. Natural disasters like earthquake and 2010 floods and security situation in Pakistan; rating has further gone down. Pakistan is sixth largest country in the word by population but number of tourists is less than a hundred thousand.

He said Pakistan has indeed one of most beautiful regions in the world with attractions like Moenjo daro, Harappa, Taxila sites along Himalayan Mountains, Chitral, Hunza valleys. Efforts can further be accelerated with participation of Private sector which could make future of tourism industry bright.

He said PIA will soon launch a mega event on resurrection of Indus Valley Civilization (The Moenjodaro Chapter) in November to highlight rich culture of the country and promote soft image of Pakistan. Conference was attended by officials PIA, Civil Aviation Authority, Foreign Airlines, Domestic Airlines, Ground Handling Services, Air Freight, Travel Agencies and Ticketing Software Companies.
