MIRWAIZ SAYS KASHMIR IS FOCUS OF INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION

Srinagar, August 20, 2011 (PPI): The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has said that the strategically important location of occupied Kashmir is forcing international attention towards its resolution.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the APHC Chairman addressing a public gathering in Srinagar said, “Kashmir is a major political issue at the international level. The important geographical location of Kashmir is now drawing attention at international level for its resolution. He said that peace in the region including Afghanistan was impossible until Kashmir was resolved.

The Mirwaiz said that the APHC had been asking the international players including the US to impress upon India to settle Kashmir. “How can we expect a stable region of South Asia without Kashmir resolution, he said.

He took strong exception to the US Senator John McCain’s statement in New Delhi on Thursday that he was encouraged to see improvement in the security situation in the territory. “We welcome his statement that India and Pakistan should sit together to solve Kashmir. But we strongly oppose the statement that Kashmir situation is improving. We expect that outsiders should talk with sense of responsibility about Kashmir situation, he said.

The APHC Chairman said, people from outside countries come to the Valley for one or two day trip and term situation as normal. “This is a surface calm in Kashmir and a forced normalcy by use of power. India has created a facade of normalcy in Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir has been virtually turned into police state. What kind of normalcy is it where opposition is put under siege and house arrest? The arrest of youth continues, he said.

The Mirwaiz castigated the occupation authorities for banning his programme at Big FM where he would discuss morality, social values and religion. “Now government is not allowing us to talk social values with our young generation. There is no doubt that Jammu and Kashmir is Muslim majority state and it is our duty to protect Muslim majority status of Jammu and Kashmir, he stated.

Referring to the protest by Anana Hazare against the corruption in India, he said, “Indian civil society, media and politicians are giving fullest publicity to the campaign but when we speak against corruption, social evils and social waywardness, censorship is enforced and our efforts are curtailed through force.
