Antony reviews country's security scenario

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) Defence Minister of India A K
Antony Monday took stock of the country's overall security
scenario at a meeting here with the top military brass.
Army Chief General VK Singh, Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal
Verma and IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne
participated in the meeting which was also attended by Defence
Secretary Shashikant Sharma.
Reviewing the measures taken by the armed forces to
secure the boundaries of the nation, Antony was briefed on the
security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, North East and
coastal regions.
He was also briefed about the various coordination
exercises and drills undertaken by the military to enhance
cooperation and interoperability among the three services.
The minister reviewed issues relating to deployment of
troops and assets across the country and thee state of
training and preparedness.
Earlier this month, in the backdrop of M V Pavit incident
off the Mumbai coast, the Minister had reviewed the coastal
security of the country and had asked Navy and Coast Guard to
prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.
He had directed the Navy and Coast Guard to ensure the
security of coasts with all available resources at their
command and identify and plug any loopholes.
Navy and Coast Guard said there has been an increase of
60-80 per cent in ship deployment and 100 per cent rise in
aircraft deployment.
For a foolproof security network in the coastal regions,
the Minister had asked the officials to speed up all pending
acquisitions of platforms, upscaling of manpower, setting up
of mechanism for close-knit coordination and operating
procedures.
