Parliamentary committee to oversee relief activities

Islamabad, September 12, 2011 (PPI): The parliamentary relief committee constituted by the prime minister to oversee the relief activities in the flood affected areas has said better coordination among the federal and provincial governments and the district administration will be ensured to meet the immediate needs and requirements of the disaster hit people in Sindh.

Addressing a news conference after a meeting here Monday, members of the committee including PPP Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira, Leader of the house in the Senate, Nayyer Bukhari and Raja Parvez Ashraf said they will meet the Sindh Chief Minister tomorrow and also visit the affected districts to examine the entire situation and ensure a transparent system of distribution of relief goods among the victims.

Qamar Zaman Kaira said though the floods is restricted to Sindh province this year but has caused devastation on a large scale. He said the federal government has so far dispatched relief goods worth two billion rupees and forty five thousand tents to the affected areas.

He said the federal government stands shoulder to shoulder with the provincial government and will spare no effort to meet the immediate needs and requirements of the affected population.

Qamar Zaman Kaira said the president, the prime minister and the United Nations have also launched separate appeals for the floods victims and expressed the confidence that the people at home and abroad besides the international community will be forthcoming to help the people in distress.

He, however, said the government will mobilize all domestic resources without waiting for the international help to tackle the situation.

Nayyer Bukhari said the floods have destroyed standing crops on a large swathe of lands which will have adverse impact on the economy of the country.

He said the international community will also be appealed to help Pakistan in the post flood situation.

Raja Parvez Ashraf urged the media to highlight the true magnitude of the disaster for a rapid domestic and international response.

He pointed out that the floods have displaced a large number of population and there is a threat of the breakout of an epidemic in the affected areas. He said coordinated efforts are required to avoid any such breakout.

Managing Director Baitul Maal Zamurd Khan told the media persons that Baitul Maal has distributed about eighty thousand family food packages in the Sindh province and has also launched 'Langar' for the tweleve thousand affected persons.

He said Baitul Maal will soon provide cooked food to the people in each affected district of Sindh province.

Earlier, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority Zafar Iqbal Qadir briefed the parliamentary committee about the damage caused by the floods and the on going relief activities.
