Chevrolet Aveo wins top U.S. safety rating
SEOUL (Yonhap) - GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., said Friday that its subcompact Aveo has received top marks in the latest U.S. vehicle safety test.
The company said the Chevrolet Aveo, marketed as the Sonic in the North American market, was named the "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for High Safety (IIHS).
The vehicle developed and produced by GM Korea received ratings of "good" in all front, side, rollover and rear crash tests.
The IIHS assigns one of four ratings - good, acceptable, marginal and poor -- for each crash test.
The company said that the Aveo was designed from the outset to meet all global safety requirements set for vehicles.
It said the highest safety rating will further enhance consumer confidence in the subcompact and contribute to sales.
The Aveo, first unveiled in February in South Korea, has a 1.6-liter Ecotec engine that produces a maximum horsepower of 114 at 6,000 rpms, and has a high fuel efficiency of 17.3 kilometers per liter of fuel.
