Official: Iran Exports 25% of Hand-Woven Carpets to US Market

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of Iran's National Carpet Center Feysal Mardasi announced that the US market is the final destination of 25% of Iran's hand-woven carpets despite the United States' unilateral economic sanctions on Tehran.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Mardasi said that Iran has exported $182mln worth of hand-woven carpets during the first five months of the current Iranian year (started on March 21), and added that 56 countries have imported Iranian hand-woven carpets.

The official added that despite the sanctions and restrictions imposed by the US on Iranian economy and trade, the US imported 25% of the Persian rugs produced in Iran last year.

Iran is the leading exporter of hand-woven carpets in the world. Persian rugs are highly sought out for their intricate design and skilled craftsmanship.

Carpet-weaving is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished manifestations of the Persian culture and art and dates back to ancient Persia.

The country produces about five million square meters of carpets annually, of which 80 percent are sold in international markets.

Many US enterprises complain that Washington's wrong policies have cost them the Iranian market which could, otherwise, bring them billions of dollars in trade. Hence, a large number of the US companies and firms have started business activities in or with Iran despite the opposition of the White House leaders.

In December 2010, the New York Times reported that over the past decade, United States-based companies have done billions of dollars in trade with Iran despite sanctions and trade embargoes imposed on Tehran.

One American company, the daily said, was permitted to do work on an Iranian gas pipeline, despite sanctions aimed at Iran's gas industry in particular.

The transactions have been made possible by a 2000 law that allows exemptions from sanctions for companies selling food or medical products, the report added.

Iranian officials have always stressed that the international and unilateral sanctions against Iran have had no result but inflicting damage on the western companies.
