UNHCR appeals for US$ 33.2 million to assist Pakistan flood victims

Islamabad/Geneva, September 19, 2011 (PPI): The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is seeking US$ 33.2 million to fund the agency's work to assist the millions of people struggling to survive devastating flooding that has hit Pakistan for a second year running.

UNHCR appeal is part of the United Nations consolidated funding appeal for US$ 356.7 million to assist flood victims for over six months.

UNHCR said the funds will be used to provide 75,000 tents and 75,000 kits of household relief items and thousands of plastic sheets, which can be used as simple, emergency shelters. The supplies will benefit an estimated 525,000 people, many of whom were just starting to recover from the historic floods of 2010.

The assistance will be targeted at the districts of Badin, Tando, Muhammad Khan, Mirpur Khas, Benazirabad, Dadu, Jamshoro and Thatta in the southern province of Sindh. In Balochistan province, affected families in Kalat, Nasirabad, Jaffarabad, Lasbela, Pishin and Qilla Abdullah districts will be assisted.

Some 65,000 families in Sindh province will receive the relief supplies, as will an additional 5,000 in Balochistan. Over the weekend, thousands of UNHCR tents were distributed in the Badin and Thatta districts of Sindh province, which has been particularly hard hit by the flooding. UNHCR together with its partners continues to identify and prioritize affected beneficiaries. UNHCR activities will also include monitoring the distribution assistance by partners to ensure it reaches vulnerable persons.

UNHCR is leading the humanitarian community's effort of supporting the government in ensuring that the most vulnerable members of flood-affected communities are protected during the emergency and during the rehabilitation period to come. Should the need arise UNHCR would also be able to assist in camp coordination and camp management activities.

In addition to tents and plastic sheets, UNHCR will distribute jerry cans, plastic buckets, mosquito nets; kitchen sets, sleeping mats, quilts, blankets and soap. "That so many of those caught up in this emergency were still trying to re-establish their lives after last year's terrible flooding makes this a very complex and urgent situation," said Mengesha Kebede, UNHCR Representative in Pakistan.

In both Sindh and Balochistan, the distribution of emergency family tents and relief items is being carried out through provincial and district authorities, as well as the existing implementing partners. These activities will also be closely coordinated with other UN Agencies and humanitarian organizations.
