Death toll in Tharparkar rises to 35 as gastro claims 8 more lives in a village

Mithi, September 20, 2011 (PPI): The death toll in rain-related incidents and due to water-borne diseases in Tharparkar district jumped to 35 after the gastro claimed eight lives of Chandia community people during last two days in Kheema Bah, a remote village of Tehsil Nangarparkar.

The villagers who expired include Ms. Khatija, 45, Ms. Zainab, 26, Sanghar, 70, Sohrab, 70, Aasia, 1 and half a year, Fatima, 4, and two other minor girls. The villagers have shifted 21 other gastro patients to Nangarparkar Tehsil Hospital for treatment however the reports reaching at district headquarters town suggest that more patients are still at the village awaiting help.

A total of 25 people died in rain-related incidents like lightning and drowning while two had died of gastro at Kaloi town earlier raising the number of casualties to 35 in Tharparkar, the Desert district, which received unprecedented monsoon rains of around 1200mm this season. The district administration however has reported only 18 deaths to the provincial government.

Receiving the information of deaths due to gastro, PPP Tharparkar District President and Chairman, District Relief Committee, MNA Dr. Mahesh Malani, MNA Dr. Khatu Mal Jeewan and Senator Gul Muhammad Lot have rushed to Nangarparkar and sent a team of doctors to affected village Kheema Bah. They also visited Nangarparkar hospital and enquired health of gastro patients. Senator Lot also gave financial assistance to the patients from his own pocket.

The MNAs and Senator took serious note of insanitation at the hospital where heaps of filth were lying everywhere causing foul smell. They also visited different government buildings where the rain-affected people have taken refuge. They complained that the administration has not provided any help to them.
