King of Malaysia to confer PhD degree on Prof Atta

Karachi, September 20, 2011 (PPI): King of Malaysia Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin is going to confer an honorary doctorate degree on Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, FRS, former Minster for Science and Technology and former Chairman of the Higher Education Commission, in October this year in Malaysia, said a press release issued Tuesday.

The Board of Directors of University of Technology Malaysia has recently decided to award Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman an honorary doctorate degree in science in recognition of his services to science and higher education sector in and outside the country, especially to the Muslim World. The King of Malaysia will confer the degree on the scientist during the 75th Convocation ceremony, programmed to be held on October 20.

Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman will also deliver an inaugural lecture on the occasion. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman has 843 publications in organic chemistry including 663 research publications, 18 patents, 103 books and 59 chapters in books. Prof. Rahman was elected as Fellow of Royal Society (London) 2006.

He won the prestigious UNESCO Science Prize 1999. He has been conferred honorary doctorate degrees by Cambridge University 1987, Coventry University 2007, Bradford University 2010, Asian Institute of Technology 2010 and many other universities. He was elected Honorary Life Fellow of Kings College, Cambridge University, UK 2007.

Successive Governments of Pakistan have conferred four civil awards: Tamgha-i-Imtiaz 1983, Sitara-i-Imtiaz 1991, Hilal-i-Imtiaz 1998, and the highest national civil award Nishan-i-Imtiaz 2002. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman has won numerous national and international Prizes including the ECO, Khwarazmi, ISESCO, KFAS and ENGRO Prizes.

Vice Chancellor Karachi University (KU) Prof Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui and Director International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences, KU, Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhary has congratulated him on his great achievement.
