Prime Minister says urgent need to meet needs of Sindh's 7.3mln flood affected people
Islamabad, September 21, 2011 (PPI): Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani says floods affected 7.3 million people in Sindh province and there is urgent need to meet their needs of food‚ shelter and medicines. In his opening remarks at Federal Cabinet meeting Wednesday‚ he said all resources will be employed for relief and rehabilitation of affected people.
Instructions have been issued to Finance Division for release of Rs 1.5 billion for flood affectees in addition to Rs 500 million already released. The government has also decided to give cash grant through Watan Cards to most vulnerable families.
He asked Sindh Government to assess damage caused to private properties so that owners are adequately compensated. He said he visited flood affected areas twice with Sindh Chief Minister and got first hand briefings from National Disaster Management Authority NDMA including loss of human lives‚ damage to standing crops‚ private properties and destruction of infrastructure. He said floods have not only caused severe infrastructure damage but also affected livelihood of millions of people.
Damage assessment has been done by United Nations and NDMA jointly and international appeal launched simultaneously from Islamabad and Geneva for $356 million. Gilani said all out efforts will be made to eradicate dengue fever disease. Federal government will play its role in helping all the federating units in facing challenges beyond their capacities.
He strongly condemned assassination of former Afghan President Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani as well as assassination of pilgrims in Mastung yesterday and suicide attack at residence of a senior police officer in Karachi. He said such cowardly acts will not deter "our resolve to eliminate terrorists whose leadership has either been killed or arrested. Writ of the government will be restored in Karachi and other parts of the country."
