SUPPORT FACILITIES OBSTRUCT KARIMUNJAWA`S DEVELOPMENT
Semarang, INDONESIA, Sept 23 (ANTARA) - The inavailability of support infrastructure is posing an obstacle to the development of Karimun Java Island, Central Java, a main tourist destination in the province.
"The condition of the island compared Seribu Islands in Jakarta for instance, is quite different," member of Commission D of the Central Java Legislative Council (DPRD) Sasmito said here Tuesday.
"One of the support infrastructure has yet to be effective in the development in Karimunjawa, which still needs access to its surroundings," Sasmito explained.
Sea transport to the island is also still lacking. There is only one speedboat from Semarang to serve visitors, and it is also a small one.
"The runway in Karimunjawa is also not very effective in contributing the development of the island, as it is only 900 meters long, and only good enough for small aircraft," he added.
In the future, other support facilities will be built, like a 1,300 meters runway to accommodate bigger aircraft.
"It would also be necessary to build more sea lanes to the island to enable more people to come there," said Sasmito.
Sasmito added that it would also be important to instill an awareness in the minds of the people of the importance of developing the island as a tourist destination, because it will also raise their standard of living.
