Iran faults EU for ending human rights dialog

Berlin, Sept 28, IRNA -- Iran's Ambassador to Germany Ali Reza Sheikh Attar blamed the European Union for ending the human rights dialog.
In an interview with IRNA, Iran's top diplomat in Germany stressed it was the EU, including Berlin, which is refusing to resume the human right talks.
Pointing out that the EU was actually instrumentalizing human rights in its international relations, he said the EU had unilaterally halted this human rights dialogue which dates back to the 1990s.
Sheikh Atttar stressed although Tehran was keen on reviving the dialog, the EU had yet to engage in practical steps to jump-start the talks.
Attar accused the West, among them Germany, of double-standard
when dealing globally with the issue of human rights.
Sheikh Attar said human rights was being used by the West as a pressure instrument.
Asked about the human rights situation of more than four million Muslims in Germany, Sheikh Attar highlighted the problem of Islamophobia and racism against Muslims in that country.
He said a number of German politicians were not only trying to benefit from the anti-Islam atmosphere in their country but were actually fuelling further tensions.
He cited Thilo Sarrazin, a former German central banker, as one such example.
Sarrazin's book 'Germany Abolishes Itself: How We Are Risking The Future of Our Nation' made international headlines and sparked protests for saying Muslims were a danger to German society./end
