PRESIDENT CALLS FOR BETTER SERVICES FOR HOME-BOUND TRAVELERS

Jakarta, Sept. 24 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all personnel at the central and local levels to serve home-bound travelers seriously, and not consider it just part of their routine job.
"The government, both at the central and regional levels, every year must improve services to the public. Don't consider it just 'business as usual'," the President said when inspecting Senen Railway Station, Central Jakarta, here on Wednesday, to have a close look at preparations for transportation services for Eid Fitr Islamic Holiday makers.
Transportation services for Eid Fitr home-bound travelers must be better from year to year so the public could feel safe and comfortable, the head of state said.
"Give the best service to the people, and don't ask for the people's service. We as the government has the responsibility," he said.
He also hailed the decision not to raise the prices of train's economic class tickets given the difficult financial condition of the ordinary people.
"The government indeed has to give subsidies. Of the 168 million passengers, 142 million are in the economic class," he said.
On the occasion, the president also witnessed the launching of a new railway for Jakarta-Blitar-Malang route.
Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal reported that this year the number of home-bound travelers using trains was estimated at 2.99 million people, an increase of 5.4 percent from 2.84 million last year.
The State Railway Company, PT KA, has prepared 1,213 coaches with 163 locomotives serving 223 destinations.
President Yudhoyono was accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo and Jakarta Police Chief Adang Firman in the visit.
Muslims in Indonesia and other countries will celebrate Eid Fitr Holidays on October 1 and 2, 2008, prompting them to return to their hometowns to be with their relatives.
