PRESIDENT: ANTI-CORRUPTION EFFORTS TO CONTINUE

Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Wednesday corruption eradication efforts in the country would continue although accordiog to the non-governmental organization Transparency International Indonesia's Corruption Perception Index (CPI) had improved.
"We are glad about it but it is not the index that is important but our efforts to eradicate corruption concretely," he said at the State Palace.
He said the success of the anti-corruption drive did not depend only on the government but also on the support of all institutions both executive, judicative and legislative.
"My hope is serious and fair law enforcement for all. I have never hindered an investigation on anyone, including relatives, friends and government officials," he said.
The president said corruption eradication efforts anywhere would always have an impact such as a slowdown in government performance or procurement of goods and services, but the campaign against corruption must not stop.
He also said the improvement of Indonesia's CPI from 54 to 36 had also happened because of an improvement in the performance of tax, customs and excise offices.
The President however also said in the battle against corruption, too, prevention was better than repression.
Therefore, the president said, he hoped all state institutions would by their own accord continuously try to improve their performance. "According to a source, based on a survey on 12 counties, Indonesia's justice system is still ranked the lowest. Therefore, let us take serious steps to improve the justice sector," he said.
He said with regard to that he hoped all parties would not point fingers at each other but "all parties and components must participate and reform must continue in all sectors."
