NGOs, LAWYERS RALLY AGAINST POLICE VIOLENCE

Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - Some 100 people came to the National Police Headquarters in south Jakarta on Wednesday to protest against all forms of violence committed by police.
The crowd consisted of activists of a number of non-governmental organizations including the Institute for Democracy and Legal Empowerment (Ideal), the Society against Police Brutality (MAKP) and lawyers.
One of the protester's spokesmen said one form of police violence they rejected was arresting lawyers while they were doing their jobs.
"A lawyer cannot be prosecuted while he is practicing his profession," Ideal chairman Mohammad Misbah said, adding the rule was contained in artcile 16 of Law No 18 of 2003.
Therefore, Misbah regretted the arrest of a lawyer named Dr Jazuni SH MH by the North Jakarta police on Sept 13, 2008. The protesters demanded that Jaruni be released immediately.
The protesters also asked National Police Chief General Sutanto to take firm actions against police officers who had committed acts of violence.
A delegation of the protesters was eventually received by National Police Headquarters officers.
Earlier in the day, a few hundred people coordinated by the Care-for-law Students' Movement (GMPH) also demonstrated outside the National Police Headquarters, They demanded that the House of Representatives (DPR) reconsider its decision to approve the planned appointment of Commissioner General Bambang Hendarso Danuri as the new National Police Chief.
Danuri is President Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono's sole candidate for the post of National Police Chief currently held by General Soetanto who is due to retire in October. The House at a plenary session on Wednesday morning endorsed Danuri's candidacy.
