NO OBJECTIONS FROM CHINA TO RI'S DAIRY PRODUCT IMPORT BAN : ENVOY

Beijing, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - China does not object to Indonesia's decision to ban import of dairy products from China following the discovery of tainted formula milk endangering human health, an Indonesian envoy said.
"The Indonesian government's decision to ban the import and circulation of Chinese-made dairy products is something normal and the Chinese government does not question it," Indonesian Ambassador to China Sudrajat said here on Wednesday.
Indonesian Drug and Food Monitoring Agency (BPOM) chief Husniah Rubiana Thamrin Akib told reporters before a hearing with the House of Representatives (DPR) on Tuesday that the Indonesian government had temporarily banned the import of dairy products from China to protect the people from consuming melamine-contaminated milk.
Indonesia was pulling 28 types of Chinese-made dairy products from stores for investigation.
The products would be withdrawn from circulation until the results of laboratory tests showed that they were free from melamine or other hazardous substances, Husniah said.
Indonesia joined other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states in banning the distribution of Chinese-made dairy products following the recent discovery of melamine in formula milk in China that had caused thousands of babies to become sick with some of them reported to have died.
"The temporary ban is something normal and market reaction to the poisoning cases that have affected thousands of babies with some of them reported to have died," Sudrajat said.
He said the Chinese government itself had also taken quick steps to prevent the tainted dairy products from further spreading both in the domestic and foreign markets.
