RI HOPES NEW JAPANESE GOVT TO STRENGTHEN BILATERAL TIES

Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - Indonesia hopes its relations with Japan will become stronger under the new Japanese government and that Japan will continue to play a role and maintain its constitution to support regional and international peace and stability, presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said here on Wednesday.
"The government welcomes the appointment of Taro Aso as the new Japanese prime minister who is known as a figure close to Indonesia," Djalal said commenting on Aso's election.
The Indonesian government, he said, believed that under the leadership of Taro Aso relations between Indonesia and Japan that had so far been strong following the declaration of strategic partnership for a peaceful and prosperous future as well as the Indonesia-Japan economic partnership agreement could be further increased.
"While he was foreign minister he had always actively made efforts to increase relations between Indonesia and Japan. We know Taro Aso also has a close relationship with Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda," he said.
The Japanese parliament on Wednesday chose Taro Aso (68) as Japan's new prime minister to replace Yasuo Fukuda who resigned last month.
The conservative former minister bowed four times to show respect and shook hands with the parliament members after the chairman of the Lower House, Yohei Kono, announced the result of the vote that gave him a victory.
In the vote participated in by most Diet members 337 of them chose Aso who is chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party while 117 others chose opposition leader Ichiro Ozawa, Kono said.
