MERPATI PLANE SKIDS OFF RUNWAY IN NIAS ISLAND
Medan, N Sumatra, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - A Merpati Nusantara Airlines plane with 17 passengers on board reportedly skidded off the runway at Binaka airport in Gunung Sitoli in Nias island on Wednesday.
The accident occurred when the CN 235 plane was making a U-turn to taxi to the apron shortly after landing, airport spokesman T Zega said.
"When the plane turned around to approach the apron, it veered too far to one side causing its front wheel to skid off the runway and get stuck in the soil," he said.
But nobody in the plane was hurt in the accident.
Zega said when the aircraft, coming in from Medan, capital of North Sumatra province, was about to land, the weather was good.
The plane was later moved to the apron for minor repairs, he said.
Meanwhile, Merpati district manager in Medan, Reynold Simatupang, was not available for comment on the accident.
A spokesperson of the authoritiy of Medan's Polonia Airport, Yuli Sudoso, said although the incident was minor, the authority would reprimand the management of the state-owned airline company.
"The accident will add a special note to Merpati's record, and we will reprimand them," Sudoso said.
