91% Pakistanis believes smoking to be harmful for health: Poll

ISLAMABAD, September 29, 2011 (PPI): The results of a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan revealed 91% of Pakistanis believe that smoking is harmful for health, while only 4% held the opinion that smoking is not harmful for health.

In a survey a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces were asked the following question: “Do you consider the use of tobacco harmful for health or not harmful for health? 91% of Pakistanis stated that the use of tobacco and smoking is harmful for health, while only 4% believed that the use of tobacco is not harmful. 5% of the respondents said they do not know and/or chose not to respond.

“Do you consider the use of tobacco harmful for health or not harmful for health?”

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2679 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during September 04-September 10, 2011. Error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
