Iraqi official: Any agreement on Palestine should guarantee refugees' right to return home

Tehran, Oct 2, IRNA – Any agreement on the Palestinian statehood should consider the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi said on Saturday.
He made the remark in his address to the 5th International Conference on the Palestinian Intifada in Tehran.
The Palestinian refugees' right to return to their homeland is a principle asserting that Palestinian refugees, both the first-generation and their descendants, have a right to return, and a right to the property they own or their ancestors left or were forced to leave in what is now occupied lands under the Zionist regime's control and the Palestinian territories (formerly part of the British Mandate of Palestine), as part of the 1948 Palestinian exodus, a result of the 1948 Palestine war and due to the 1967 Six-Day War.
All Muslim countries wish the freedom of Palestine, Palestinians and the international community should pursue a fair approach which will guarantee an independent state for the Palestinians based in Quds, the Iraqi official underscored.
Referring to the ongoing Islamic Awakening in the region, he thanked the Iranian nation and its Supreme Leader for holding such conferences in support of Palestinians and other liberation movements in the region.
“Peoples in regional countries have been prompted by Islam to rise up and gain their independence and dignity, al-Nujaifi added.
Islamic world by using past experience should resolve confidence crisis among its various members, he stressed.
This is the Islamic courtiers that should impose their political and economic doctrine to the West through a firm approach, the official underlined.
He noted that sectarian violence is a major problem in Iraq, adding that the Iraqi nation is committed to solve its problem thanks to neighbors’ help and the establishment of national unity there.
The 5th International Conference on the Palestinian Intifada with participation of parliamentary delegations including several speakers, leading political figures and scholars from 50 Islamic and non-Islamic countries as well as leaders of several Palestinian groups opened in Tehran Saturday morning.
The two-day conference is focusing on the motto of “Palestine, a land only for Palestinians”.
Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmud Abbas presented a Palestinian request for UN membership in this year’s UN General Assembly meeting.
According to the bid, the future Palestinian state would include the West Bank and Gaza, with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.
The Zionist regime and the US strongly have opposed the Palestinian Authority move./end
