YUDHOYONO: REMOVE NEGATIVE THINKING OVER SUPREME COURT BILL

Jakarta, Sept 28 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all parties here on Sunday to remove negative thinking and prejudice towards the government proposal to raise the pension age of supreme court's judges to 70 years old.

"Remove the negative thinking. It is our task to work together to put the justice system in order and do not link the supreme court bill to Pak (Mr) Bagir (the head of the suprement court) and other supreme court judges," he said after a fast-breaking gathering with newsmen.
The head of state said the government had no intention at all to hinder the process of regeneration in the supreme court with the proposal.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla said before the government had decided to raise the pension age of supreme court's judges from 65 to 70 years old solely because it considered that they were like professors.
"Supreme court judges are like professors whose job requires adequate education, experience, espertise and certainly good health," he said.
He said however if the bill failed to be passed before the end of the Ramadhan that would be the affairs of the House of Representatives and the government had no special measure to deal with it.
Kalla said the bill could not as yet be approved because the time allocated for disucssing it might possibly be too short.
Bagir meanwhile had called on all parties to stop criticizing and cursing him with regard to the bill. He said he and other supreme court judges did not do anything wrong.
Bagir said he would retire on October 6. "My stance remains that under current conditions I will retire," he said adding he had already submitted a request for his resignation to the president six months ago. "The request remains effective until now," he said.
