YUDHOYONO HOPES FOR ORDERLY PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

Jakarta, Sept 28 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed the hope here on Sunday that the presidential debate as part of the presidential elections in 2009 could be done orderly so that people could understand the views or vision of the candidates taking part in it.

Speaking to newsmen at a fast-breaking gathering the President said to assure orderly implementation of the debate he said the number of candidates' supporters to attend the debate among others could be limited.
"I think the debate should be implemented orderly and it should also be determined if supporters of the candidates would be there," he said.
He said a shout or an applause could possibly cause distraction that would make the people unable to understand the views of the candidates.
The head of state said if the debate went smoothly people would be able to understand the concept presented by the candidates in the debate.
"I also hope that debate for the election of regional leaders will also be done well," he said.
He made the statement after comparing political debates in the country so far and the recent US presidential debate between Barrack Obama and John Mc Cain.
On the occasion President Yudhoyono also spoke about a number of figures who wished to run for presidency in the 2009 elections.
He said the appearance of the figures was also accompanied by various forms of campaigning including attacking the government's policy.
"I can understand that during campaigning the government can be made as if their common enemy. It is a political reality and we must be able to face various eventualities including black campaigning," he said adding that such campaigning could harm democratization which is currently still undergoing development in the country.
"The General Election Commission certainly will produce campaign regulations. I believe people still have a heart to feel what is right and wrong. If they are wrong they will certainly get a social sanction from them and if they violate the law they will face justice," he said.
Regarding attacks on the government's policies President Yudhoyono said it was not necessary for him to respond to them all. "If I respond to them all I will have no time to work. And if I am too reactive it will only create a political noise. Later when the time comes I will encounter them all because people may believe them unless I do not do it," he said.
